The acceptance of Turkey into the Arab League is of particular importance for Ankara as it will try to promote a leadership role in the region on the Palestinian issue. In his speech at the meeting in Cairo, Mr Hakan Fidan criticized Israel’s efforts to change the identity of Jerusalem and emphasized that the Islamic world will continue its joint efforts to pressure the international community to stop Tel Aviv’s actions. Turkey had been excluded from the Arab League mainly because of its support for the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt and its involvement in Syria in an unsuccessful attempt to topple the Assad regime. The normalization of Ankara’s relations with Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and most recently Egypt, after last week’s visit to Ankara by Egyptian President Sisi, seems to be putting an end to Turkey’s isolation.

This time it is not believed that the Damask gave the green light for Turkey’s participation in the Arab League summit, which was also attended by the head of the EU’s foreign policy Joseph Borelthe head of UNRWA, Filipe Lazzarini, and the UN Senior Coordinator for Humanitarian Assistance and Reconstruction for Gaza, Sigrid Kaag. Borrell said the EU supported mediation efforts by Egypt, Qatar and the United States to end the conflict. He noted, however, that “those waging war show no concern for ending it.” He said they are neglecting International Law and the rulings of the International Criminal Court and the International Court of Justice in The Hague. Borel also accused “radical members of the Israeli government” of trying to make “the creation of a future Palestinian state impossible.”

In his speech Hakan Fidan emphasized that the bloodshed in Gauze it was a direct result of impunity for previous Israeli attacks. He said those who support Netanyahu are complicit in the ongoing genocide. Fidan was addressing the upcoming Turkish-Arab Economic Forum scheduled for October in Istanbul, aimed at strengthening economic ties and exploring new avenues of cooperation among Arab League members. He stressed the importance of maintaining and developing existing cooperation mechanisms and expressed readiness to create new mechanisms with a vision for the future and called on Arab countries, Muslim nations, Palestinian groups and international organizations to unite to stop Israeli aggression .
