Comoros President Azali Assoumani was slightly injured in a stabbing attack today, government spokeswoman Fatima Ahamada told Reuters, adding that the attacker had been arrested.

“The head of state was the victim of an attack in Salimani-Itsandra,” a community bordering Moroni, in the highlands of the archipelago’s capital”… “Thank God his life is not in danger,” Ahamada told AFP .

“President Azali Assoumani was slightly injured with a knife while attending a funeral,” a source close to the presidency told AFP, who asked not to be named, adding that “his injuries are not serious” and that the assailant had been arrested.

A source said the attacker is a young “active police officer” who joined the force in 2022.

Assoumani, 65, a former army chief of staff who came to power in a military coup, was re-elected president in January after disputed elections that were followed by two days of deadly protests.

His critics accuse him of growing authoritarianism in this archipelago of 870,000 people.
