The NATO he could have done more to equip her Ukraine to try to prevent a Russian invasion in 2022, the outgoing head of the alliance said in an interview published today.

“Now we are providing military hardware to a war – then we could have provided military hardware to prevent war,” said NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in the German newspaper FAS.

Stoltenberg highlighted NATO’s reluctance to provide weapons, which Kiev had requested before the Russian invasion due to fears of escalating tensions with Russia.

After the outbreak of war, non-NATO Kiev received weapons systems from its allies after initial hesitation.

Stoltenberg, a former prime minister of Norway, will leave his post at NATO in October, a post he has held since 2014. Former Dutch prime minister Mark Rutte will succeed him, it was announced in June.

In the interview, Stoltenberg stated that the end of the war in Ukraine will be achieved only at the negotiating table.

“In order to end this war, there will have to be a dialogue with Russia again at some stage. But it will have to rely on Ukrainian power,” he said.
