The US Pentagon confirmed on Tuesday that an MQ-9 Reaper drone crashed yesterday Monday in the Yemen region, where the Houthi rebels assured that they had shot down at least three unmanned aerial vehicles in the last week.
“An investigation is underway,” Defense Department spokesman Lt. Gen. Pat Ryder told Defense Department-accredited reporters, adding that he had no further details to release at this time.
The claim by the Iran-backed Houthis that they shot down three samples of the press last week is “inaccurate” and the number they gave is “very high”, according to the spokesman.
This is the third confirmed case of an MQ-9, an aircraft used for aerial surveillance as well as strikes, crashing near Yemen or within the country since November 2023.
The Houthis, who control most of northern Yemen, began launching attacks that month in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, targeting merchant ships they say are linked to Israel, the US or Britain, saying they are acting in a sign of solidarity with the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, amid the war between Israel and Hamas.
Their attacks have become a major obstacle to shipping in this region vital to global trade, prompting Washington to form a naval coalition and launch hundreds of strikes against rebel positions and weapons systems in and around Yemen, in some cases along with Britain.
