Russian media report, without evidence, that Ukraine is approaching the acquisition of nuclear “dirty bombs”

by

Russian news agencies, citing an unnamed source close to the Russian intelligence service, said today that Ukraine was close to acquiring plutonium-based nuclear “dirty bombs”.

TASS, RIA and Interfax news agencies reported that a Russian intelligence official had said that Kyiv was developing nuclear weapons at the site of the damaged Chernobyl nuclear power plant, which were sealed in 2000.

The Government of Ukraine assures that it does not intend to become a member of the closed club of countries with nuclear arsenals again. It gave up nuclear weapons in 1994, following the break-up of the former Soviet Union.

Just before ordering invasion of Ukraine by the Russian armed forcesOn February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin said in a speech that Kyiv was using Soviet know-how to build nuclear weapons, adding that it thought it was preparing to launch an attack on Russia. The Russian president did not provide any evidence to support this claim.

The aim of the invasion, according to Putin, is to “demilitarize” and “de-Naziize” Ukraine, as well as to prevent its accession to NATO. The West, which has flatly rejected the Kremlin’s tenant, has reacted by imposing harsh sanctions on Moscow and offering military and other aid to Kyiv.
