US Deputy Secretary of State John Bass visited Ankara on Tuesday, where he met with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and Undersecretary Nuh Yilmaz.

According to Turkish diplomatic sources, developments concerning Syria were discussed during the meeting between Yilmaz and Bash.

Ankara has repeatedly expressed to the US its expectation to cut ties with the YPG and the militia it leads in northern Syria, calling the group a terrorist organization and accusing it of being linked to the PKK, which operates against Turkey. It also highlights that continued US support for the YPG poses future risks to regional stability and security.

The two sides tried to find ways to deal with Turkish concerns, while agreeing that they will not allow the revival of the Islamic State group, the same sources said.

During the meeting, the security, political, economic and humanitarian situation in Syria was assessed and the negative effects of the increasing tension in the region were highlighted.

In a post on Platform X, John Bass spoke of a “productive discussion with Hakan Fidan” about our mutual efforts to address threats to our security, promote peace in the Middle East and further strengthen the strategic of our partnership”.

The American official traveled to Ankara from Pakistan.
