A man was killed during a law enforcement operation in Saint Louis, New Caledonia, overnight Wednesday to Thursday, raising to 12 the death toll since riots broke out in the French South Pacific archipelago earlier this year, authorities said. .

Riots were underway between citizens and gendarmes, who used tear gas, in this stronghold of the independence movement, south of Noumea, the capital, an AFP correspondent found.

The marshals are looking for about ten people in St. Louis.

They are suspected of opening fire on law enforcement forces, mainly under Roque Victoren Umitan, known as “Banana”, who was killed in July in an exchange of fire with gendarmes.

“We are not terrorists, we are not at war!” a mother shouted amid law enforcement operations.

After violent incidents linked to the pro-independence movement and against electoral reform broke out on May 13, twelve people, including two gendarmes, have been killed.

Although tensions have recently appeared to be de-escalating, the southern part of Grand Terre (the largest island of the archipelago) remains inaccessible by road due to the lack of security at the level of the community of Saint-Louis, a stronghold of the homonymous tribe and supporters of independence, about ten kilometers from the Noumea.
