The images of an 11-year-old boy who crossed the Slovak border from Ukraine alone are incredible. The only contact he had was a handwritten phone.
The 11-year-old boy from Ukraine, specifically from Zaporizhia, passed alone in neighboring Slovakia as his parents had to be left behind, in a shocking proof of the human cost of the war that Russia has unleashed against Ukraine.
Start with a backpack and a plastic bag
The boy began his journey with a backpack, a plastic bag with a few belongings and a phone number written with a pen in his hand, the Slovak Interior Ministry said.
In photos posted by the ministry on Facebook on Saturday, the boy is seen eating and drinking something by volunteers upon arrival in Slovakia.
“This is the biggest hero of last night,” the Slovak ministry said. “He won the volunteers with his smile, his courage and his determination, worthy of a true hero.”
According to the ministry, he contacted the child’s relatives, using the number written on his hand, and then they came to pick it up. “The whole story ended well,” the Facebook post said.
The boy is said to be from Zaporizhia in southeastern Ukraine – the site of Europe’s largest nuclear plant – which was attacked by Russians last week, sparking fears of a much larger Chernobyl disaster.
His mother thanks the Slovak people
In a subsequent post, the Slovak Ministry of the Interior informs that the boy is in good health and has been transferred to Bratislava, where his relatives are. In fact, his mother speaks in this post, who with tears in her eyes thanks all the people of Slovakia who helped her son. According to the ministry, the mother had to stay back in Ukraine, as her own mother is bedridden and can not travel.
The Russia-Ukraine war has been raging for 12 days, causing heavy losses and an unprecedented refugee crisis. In fact, more than one million Ukrainians have already found refuge in Poland alone, and the number is expected to rise further.
