Western governments have expressed concern about Russian activity in eastern Moldova, Politico reports from London, citing sources familiar with Western security intelligence estimates.
These concerns include the possibility of provocative attacks to justify Russian intervention.
It is noted that there are already 2,000 Russian soldiers in Transnistria, in the pro-Russian autonomous province of eastern Moldova.
According to Politico, “Western security intelligence has concluded that there is a credible threat that Russian agents could conduct deceptive operations as a pretext to justify a full-scale Russian military intervention, in a repeat of the events in the eastern Ukrainian province of Donbass.”
The same sources say that Russia could seek to build a land “bridge” that would connect Odessa with Transnistria, something that was depicted on the military map on which Belarusian President Lukashenko appeared to inform his officials a few days ago.
It is noted that Moldova submitted an application for rapid accession to the EU last week, while the US Secretary of State visited the capital Chisinau on Sunday. According to Politico, other Western leaders are expected to visit the country.
