Actress Maggie Smith has died aged 89.

She had the iconic role of Professor McGonagall in the Harry Potter films.

As the AP points out, she was a masterful actress who even “bewitched” the audience in her Oscar-winning performance in “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie” in 1969, gained a fanatical following as the Countess of Grantham in “Downton Abbey” and was adored by the children of the 90s generation and not only as Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter films.

Smith’s sons, Chris Larkin and Toby Stevens, said in a statement that Smith died early Friday in a London hospital.

She leaves behind two sons and five much-loved grandchildren who are devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother“, her family said in a statement to reporters.

Smith has been described as a prominent British actress representative of a generation of great artists that included Vanessa Redgrave and Judi Dench.

“Jean Brodie” won her the Academy Award for Best Actress and a British Academy Award (BAFTA) in 1969.

She added another Best Supporting Actress Oscar for “California Suite” in 1978.
