At a news conference on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, Blinken said Washington believes the way forward is diplomacy, not conflict.
US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said on Friday that the choices made by all parties in the Middle East in the coming days will determine which path the region takes and will have profound consequences for years to come.
At a press conference on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, the United States’ top diplomat said Washington has made clear it believes the way forward is through diplomacy, not conflict.
The head of US diplomacy was asked about the Israeli attack in Beirut and said that the US is still gathering information about what happened in the previous hours.
Blinken noted that Israel has a legitimate goal, the return of its citizens to their homes.
But he emphasized that the way he defends matters.
The US secretary also warned anyone who tries to take advantage of the situation to target US interests that the US will take “every measure” necessary to defend its citizens.
