The bomb Israel used to kill Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut last Friday was a US-made guided weapon, a US senator said today.

Mark Kelly, chairman of the Senate Air Force Subcommittee, said Israel used a 900-pound Mark 84 bomb in an interview with NBC television. This statement is the first that an American official has made about the type of ammunition used.

We see more use of guided munitions (Joint Direct Attack Munitions or JDAM) and we continue to provide these weapons,” Kelly said.

“That 2,000-pound (900-kilogram) bomb that was used, it was a Mark 84 series bomb, to take out (Hassan) Nasrallah.”he said.

The Israeli military announced on Saturday that it had killed Nasrallah in an attack on the group’s headquarters in the southern suburbs of Beirut, but declined to comment on what kind of weapons were used in the operation. The Pentagon also had no comment.

JDAMs turn simple, unguided bombs into guided weapons using fins and a GPS guidance system.
