Thirty dead and nearly 1,000 missing in Buncombe County alone – Rescue crews battle to restore power and communications

At least 116 people lost their lives across the country since the hurricane made landfall in Florida last Thursday, according to the BBC, a number expected to rise as officials reach more devastated areas. At least 30 people lost their lives and about 1,000 are missing in a single county in North Carolina, the Buncombe County. This is the most affected area.
Charlotte, North Carolina city councilman Tariq Bokhari shared with X footage from the Lake Lure which has been filled with debris, describing the scene as “post-apocalyptic”.

“We have suffered a biblical catastrophe”said Ryan Cole, county emergency official. “This is the most significant natural disaster any of us have ever seen.”
Emergency crews in Buncombe County are fighting to restore power and communication.
“This storm brought catastrophic … historic proportions,” said North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper.

The majority of deaths from the hurricane have been confirmed in North and South Carolina, where Helene hit the region as a tropical storm.
The North Carolina National Guard has rescued more than 119 people – among them an infant, according to Lt. Gen. Todd Hunt. The most rescues, 41 in number, were recorded north of Asheville.
Many gas stations remain closed across North Carolina, while those that are open have seen massive lines. Also, in the few open supermarkets, citizens run to buy bottled water.
Hurricane damage estimated between 95 and 110 billion dollars at the national level.
