Russian forces intercepted a Ukrainian drone near the Russian city of Kurchatov today, but the nearby Kursk nuclear power plant was not damaged, the region’s governor said.

Governor Alexei Smirnov said debris from the drone caused explosions in a building unrelated to the nuclear plant.

Several Russian Telegram channels earlier reported the “Ukrainian attack,” which they said had been intercepted by air defenses but had caused a fire several kilometers away from the nuclear plant.

The operator of the nuclear plant, Rosenergoatom, said the facility was operating normally and radiation levels remained within normal limits.

Reuters was unable to confirm the reports from independent sources.

Ukrainian forces entered the Kursk region in a surprise cross-border incursion on August 6 and remain there despite the Russian military trying to push them back.

Rafael Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, visited the nuclear plant on August 27 and said it was particularly vulnerable to a major accident because it lacked a protective dome that could protect it from missiles, drones or artillery shells.
