American concern about Israel’s next moves in Lebanon and Iran – Tonight’s meeting of the Israeli cabinet is critical
American statements and reports of the last few hours reveal that the Biden administration allegedly does not fully control the decision-making criteria in Israel, at a particularly sensitive time for the course of the war in the Middle East.
The main unanswered questions of Washington, which have emerged in the last twenty-four hours, are two: On the one hand, in what way and at what time will Israel respond to the recent Iranian missile attack. On the other hand, what exactly is the objective and operational limits of Israeli activity and presence in Lebanon.
In particular, a State Department official told CNN on condition of anonymity that “Israel has not clearly assured the Americans that it does not intend to strike Iranian nuclear targets,” effectively denying recent leaks that indicated the exact opposite. The climate of concern prevailing in the Biden administration is described even more clearly, with the same official expressing the wish that “Israel will use its military capabilities wisely.”
Center of Naval Analyses: Major hits in Nevatim
As for the Lebanese front, the American mediator Amos Hochstein, with today’s post on the X platform (formerly twitter), characterizes as irresponsible and frivolous the press reports, according to which the United States had given its pre-approval for the start of the Israeli ground operation in Lebanon, which, meanwhile, is already expanding.
An additional aspect of the American embarrassment is exposed by the authoritative news site Axios, which, citing its significant access to the State Department, reports that the Biden administration is seeking an immediate presidential election in Lebanon, believing that the restoration of state institutions will help end of the Israel-Hezbollah military confrontation.
Finally, on a communication level, it is certainly not a coincidence that yesterday’s publication of research by the Center of Naval Analyzes (Center of Naval Analyzes) funded by the American armed forces, which reveals that the blows received by the Israeli air base in Nevatim during the recent Iranian missile attack, are much more and more important than what had been unofficially leaked. The conclusions of the research may, on the one hand, reveal the weak points of the Israeli air defense – but, on the other hand, they could justify the need for the Israelis to retaliate against the Iranians with the same, hard, currency.
Despite the growing clamor on the other side of the Atlantic, Israel continues to be tight-lipped about its intentions, leaving both Washington and all regional actors in the Middle East to wait with interest to see exactly what will be decided during the today’s meeting of the limited composition of the Israeli Council of Ministers, responsible for security and defense issues, scheduled for today, late in the evening.
