Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said today that achieving a just peace in Ukraine will be impossible if Kiev loses its neutrality by joining a coalition such as the US-led NATO military alliance.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said peace talks can begin if Kiev agrees to give up large swaths of territory claimed by Moscow and abandon its bid to join NATO.

Zakharova, referring to reports that the West is discussing a version in which Ukraine could join NATO in exchange for accepting Russian control over Ukrainian territory, said that achieving a just peace in Ukraine would be impossible if it is not ensured that the Ukrainian regime will be neutral and will not join an alliance.

Zakharova said what Moscow called a “special military operation” in Ukraine was a reaction to NATO’s eastward expansion.
