Stoltenberg: Conflict must not extend beyond Ukraine – Situation can be avoided

by

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg has said the organization has “significantly strengthened” its presence in the eastern part of the alliance in response to the crisis.

He added that NATO has a responsibility to ensure that the conflict does not extend beyond Ukraine or escalate.

“We will defend every inch of our allied territory,” he added, saying he was on standby.

Ukraine has repeatedly called on the alliance to implement a no-fly zone over the country – but has refused to do so in a bid to avoid escalation of the conflict.

“Targeting the civilian population with fire is a war crime and is not acceptable. We were clear that Putin would pay a heavy price for his aggression against Ukraine, and that price is exactly what he is paying now. Russia has been hit hard by sanctions and isolated from the rest of the world. What is happening in Ukraine is frightening and is affecting us all. It is our duty to ensure that the conflict does not escalate and does not extend beyond Ukraine. “The situation can be avoided,” he stressed.
