A 24-year-old US soldier who pleaded guilty to trying to help the Islamic State (IS) jihadist group plan attacks against US forces in the Middle East was sentenced to 14 years in prison on Friday.

In this effort, he had conveyed information to FBI agents who approached him as alleged members of the jihadist organization.

Cole Bridges, who enlisted in the US military in 2019, pleaded guilty in June 2023 to charges of attempting to provide material assistance to a foreign terrorist organization and attempted murder of members of the US armed forces.

As the case file states, in October 2020 Bridges was approached by an undercover FBI agent, who he urged to launch attacks in New York. He then gave advice on how he could cause more casualties by launching attacks against US military forces in the Middle East.

Cole Bridges had also sent two videos showing him standing next to an Islamic State flag and calling for an ambush on US soldiers.
