One man was killed and nine others were injured in a shooting that occurred Saturday near Tennessee State University around 5 p.m., as the Nashville school was celebrating the return of students.

As the crowd began to thin out, gunfire suddenly broke out between two groups, a Nashville police spokesman said.

At least three of the injured are minors but without serious injuries, Nashville police told X.

The shooting occurred along a street where TSU’s homecoming parade took place in the morning, Nashville police and fire officials said at a news conference Saturday afternoon.

Firefighters who were already in the area doing community outreach during the morning parade attended to the injured after the shooting, city fire spokeswoman Kendra Loney said.

Firefighters at the scene of the shooting “said it just sounded like fireworks … until they realized they weren’t,” Loney said.

“Our staff have told me of times where they’ve ripped off their belts and done things like using them as a tourniquet because they didn’t have their med bags with them,” Loney said.

The man who died was 24, police told X. His name, the names of the injured and information about a motive have not been released.
