Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has assured US President Joe Biden that Israel intends to hit military targets in Iran, not nuclear or oil facilities, according to a Washington Post report citing two well-informed officials.

Netanyahu reportedly made the pledge during a phone call last week with Biden, during which the two leaders discussed Israel’s plans to retaliate against Iran’s Oct. 1 missile attack.

A US official told the paper that Netanyahu agreed to plan Israeli retaliation in such a way that it would not impact the November 5 US presidential election. A potential attack on Iran’s oil facilities could send oil prices soaring, hurting Kamala Harris’ candidacy amid voter discontent over rising fuel prices. The official estimated that Israel’s retaliatory blow would come before the Nov. 5 U.S. election, as any delay could be perceived as weakness.
