A 1,121-pound pumpkin has given victory to a Minnesota gardening teacher who is the champion of the annual Northern California Pumpkin Weighing Contest.
THE Travis Giengerof Anoka, Minnesota, bested his competitor by just 2.7 pounds at the 51st World Championship Pumpkin Weight-Off in Half Moon Bay, south of San Francisco.
The winning pumpkin weighed him 2,471 lb (1,121 kg), down, however, from the world record he set last year with a pumpkin weighing 2,749 pounds (1,247 kg).
Gienger, 44, said that as he has done in the past, he focused on it has healthy soil and well-nourished plantsbut that this year’s record-breaking heavy rain likely affected his pumpkin growth.
“We had a really, really hard time and somehow, I kept workingGienger said. “I had to work for it, and we did it in the end».
Gienger and his family drove his giant pumpkin 35 hours to California.
He said the giant pumpkin’s next stop will be in Southern California, where a team of professional carvers will make a three-dimensional sculpture at a Halloween event.
