Russian soldier killed, colleague wounded in attack by unknowns on armed forces convoy in Chechnya
A Russian soldier was killed and a colleague was wounded in an attack by unknown people on an armed forces convoy in Chechnya on Thursday, according to Russian state media.
Unknown attackers targeted a convoy in a suburb of Grozny, the capital of the province.
“Unidentified persons attacked a military convoy in a suburb of Grozny,” the official RIA news agency reported, citing the local detachment of the National Guard.
“One soldier was killed and another was wounded,” the agency continued. “Measures have been taken to find and arrest the perpetrators,” he added.
Russia was embroiled in a series of bloody wars in Chechnya in the 1990s and 2000s. The Russian armed forces eventually wiped out rebel groups seeking secession of the Muslim-majority province from Russia, which the Kremlin accused of carrying out attacks across the country.
Ramzan Kadyrov, who has ruled the province with an iron fist for nearly two decades, receives large subsidies from Moscow in exchange for his unwavering loyalty to President Vladimir Putin.
Human rights groups complain that Mr. Kadyrov rules Chechnya as his personal fiefdom and ruthlessly represses anyone who opposes him.
