Starmer: “This law could jeopardize all efforts of the international community for humanitarian aid in Gaza”
Britain and Germany have criticized the Israeli parliament’s approval of a law banning the UN agency for Palestine refugees (UNRWA) from operating in Israel.
“The United Kingdom is gravely concerned,” British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said in a statement. “This law could make UNRWA’s essential work for the Palestinians impossible, jeopardize all the international community’s humanitarian aid efforts in Gaza and the provision of critical health and education services in the West Bank,” he said.
The humanitarian situation in Gaza is “simply unacceptable”, he added.
In the statement issued by Germany’s foreign ministry, Commissioner responsible for human rights and humanitarian aid, Louise Amtsberg, also said that the decision “makes UNRWA’s work in Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem virtually impossible (…) jeopardizing vital humanitarian aid for millions of people”.
Amchberg stressed that implementing the Israeli law in its current form would be “an ominous step” and that “our efforts to achieve peace in the Middle East would be hindered.”
“Israel’s action against a UN-mandated organization that has been doing essential work since 1950 is a dangerous sign of lack of respect for the United Nations and international cooperation,” added the Commissioner.
