However, many obstacles must be overcome, as the myriad failed attempts to secure a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza have demonstrated.
“The war in the north will be over by the end of the year,” Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich told reporters on Tuesday, referring to the Lebanese front, adding emphatically that 2025 “will not be a year of war, it will be a year exit from the war”.
Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallad, speaking on Tuesday, noted that Hezbollah’s hierarchy has now been destroyed, and estimated that its missile capability is at 20 percent of what it was before the conflict.
Besides, the IDF stressed on Tuesday that the military objectives in Lebanon have almost been achieved, and that the government can now take diplomatic initiatives. Senior Israeli officials told the Ynet news site that there is progress on an agreement to end the conflict in Lebanon.
