A Russian bomb attack on an apartment building in Kharkiv killed a child and injured 29 people
The Russian attack with a guided bomb yesterday Wednesday that hit an apartment building in Kharkiv, the second largest Ukrainian city, resulted in the death of a child and the wounding of 29 other people, the military governor of the homonymous region Oleh Sinekhubov announced via Telegram.
Earlier, the local authorities spoke of 23 injured, clarifying that there were still victims “under the debris”.
The guided bomb, an aircraft-dropped weapon used daily in Russia’s war with Ukraine, hit an apartment building, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a speech.
District Governor Sinehubov said that investigations into the building were “continuing”.
He spoke of “quite a lot of damage” due to the “enemy guided bomb”, warning that there is a threat of “collapse” of the apartment building which “endangers the work of the rescue teams”. He mentioned three people, including a woman and a child, who were trapped “under the debris” and assured that the rescue crews were “trying to get them out”.
Other tenants were trapped on the higher floors of the building, Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov said earlier, adding that the bomb destroyed several floors. Videos uploaded online show a huge hole in the facade of a tall building.
Kharkiv, the largest city in northeastern Ukraine, 30 kilometers from the border with Russia, has been frequently targeted by the Russian military since the war broke out on February 24, 2022.
Ukrainian President Zelensky demanded last night from his Western allies to react to this attack. “Every decision that is delayed means dozens, if not hundreds, of Russian bombs (hitting) Ukraine. The lives of our fellow citizens depend on their decisions,” he argued.
Kiev is demanding that its Western allies allow it to strike targets deep inside Russia with the weapons they have made available to it.
In May, the Russian military launched an attack on sectors of the Kharkiv region, with the stated aim of creating a buffer zone to reduce Ukrainian attacks on military and industrial facilities on Russian soil. The operation had no tangible result.
