Ukraine’s visibly annoyed President Volodymyr Zelensky has confirmed a leak to the New York Times that he has requested Tomahawk cruise missiles from the US as part of his recently unveiled “plan for victory” in the war with Russia.
“This is information that was confidential” and the issue was discussed “between Ukraine and the White House,” Mr Zelensky told reporters in the Icelandic capital Reykjavik.
He did not hide his displeasure at the fact that his request for the supply of these missiles was leaked to the press.
“How should we receive these messages? Does that mean there is nothing confidential (in the talks) between allies?” he wondered.
About two weeks ago, Mr. Zelensky presented a five-point plan to end the war with Russia on Ukraine’s terms.
The plan reportedly calls for inviting Ukraine to join NATO, as well as upgrading its military.
However, Ukraine’s joining the North Atlantic Treaty Organization before the war ends would involve all of its member states being embroiled in the conflict, and this is causing from hesitation to outright rejection of the idea by members of the military alliance.
Tomahawk cruise missiles have a maximum effective range of 2,400 kilometers, so if launched from Ukraine they could hit major Russian cities such as St. Petersburg, Moscow and Yekaterinburg.
