Five hoax bomb threats disrupted voting for about 30 minutes at two Georgia polling places Tuesday morning
Hoax threats briefly disrupted voting at two polling stations in the US state of Georgia on Tuesday morning, according to local officials who say they will seek a court order to extend voting hours.
As CNN reports, five hoax bomb threats were reported, prompting a temporary evacuation of two Fulton County locations for about 30 minutes, Nadine Williams, the county’s director of registration and elections, said at a news conference.
“Thankfully, these locations are now operational again and all polling locations are safe with an active security presence,” Williams said.
County officials will seek a court order to keep two locations — CH Gullatt Elementary and Etris Community Center — open a little longer tonight, Williams said. Polling stations are located in Union City, which is southwest of Atlanta.
Margaret Huang, president and CEO of the Southern Poverty Law Center, praised the swift response to the threats and efforts to extend voting hours.
“We don’t want to allow this to disrupt our votes,” she said.
