The United States will send more than 500 missiles to Ukraine in the coming weeks to bolster its air defenses, speeding up the delivery of military aid to the war-torn country, according to a Wall Street Journal (WSJ) report.

Citing an unnamed Pentagon official, the WSJ reports that until the Nov. 5 election contest — when Republican Donald Trump prevailed over Democratic challenger Kamala Harris — the White House planned to deliver the missiles to Ukraine by April.

With the delivery of these missiles for the Patriot and NASAMS (National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System) systems, it is estimated that the needs of the Ukrainian air defense will be covered this year, as the Pentagon official points out to the WSJ.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has for months called on NATO allies to bolster his country with more weapons systems and allow it to launch long-range missile strikes against Russian territory far from the border.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which began in February 2022, has sparked Moscow’s biggest confrontation with the West since the Cold War, with Russian officials saying the war is now entering its most dangerous phase.

On Friday, the Biden administration said it would allow military equipment suppliers to operate in Ukraine to maintain and repair weapons systems supplied by the Pentagon, in a remarkable policy shift aimed at bolstering Ukraine’s armed forces in their fight against against the Russian invaders.
