Israel’s new Defense Minister Israel Katz said on Monday that Iran is “more exposed than ever to bombing its nuclear facilities”.

“We are being given the opportunity to achieve our most important goal: to prevent and eliminate the existential threat to the State of Israel,” Mr. Katz said via X.

Israel has for years accused Iran of seeking a nuclear arsenal, something the Islamic Republic — whose leaders often call for the destruction of the Jewish state — has always denied.

In 2018, the US, under President Donald Trump, withdrew from the international agreement signed three years earlier in Vienna to limit and control Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

In retaliation, Tehran increased its production of enriched uranium to levels it had never reached before, and its stockpile has not stopped growing, according to reports by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), part of the UN system.

On October 26, the Israeli air force launched a strike against military targets in Iran, in retaliation for the firing of some 200 rockets by the Islamic Republic against Israeli territory on October 1.

Before these bombings, Israeli officials, as well as former ministers, favored targeting Iran’s nuclear facilities, but according to US press reports, that option was ruled out after pressure from the US government.
