The need for immediate confirmation of the safety of nuclear facilities in Ukraine is underlined by the EU Heads of State and Government in a joint statement issued in the early hours of this morning, shortly after the end of the first day of the informal summit in Versailles.
The “27” also confirm their intention to take additional measures, if necessary, against Russia.
More specifically, EU Heads of State and Government unequivocally condemn the Russian invasion – in cooperation with Belarus – of Ukraine, stigmatize the attacks on the civilian population and welcome the decision of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court to launch an investigation into the responsibilities of the involved in them.
The “27” call on Russia to immediately cease military action against Ukraine and to fully respect the territorial integrity of the latter. The EU Heads of State and Government also applauded the courage of the Ukrainian people, who, they say, “protect their country, but also our common values ​​of freedom and democracy.”
They also pledged to continue to provide political, economic, material and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine. They also say they are willing to contribute to the reconstruction of a democratic Ukraine when the Russian aggression stops.
The 27 also say they are prepared to offer temporary protection to all refugees, while calling on Russia to abide by the rules of international law and to guarantee humanitarian aid to the victims of its military intervention.
Finally, the European Council notes that it has taken note of Ukraine’s request for EU membership and has asked the European Commission for its opinion on the matter. The “27” report that pending the Commission’s opinion, they will further strengthen Europe’s relations with Ukraine.
