The previous leadership, Ricardo Lang and Omid Nuripour, resigned after the Greens’ poor election results in the eastern states last September
Franziska Brattner and Felix Banaszczak are the new leading duo of the Greens, as emerged from the party’s congress which began its work today in Wiesbaden.
45-year-old Franziska Brattner, Deputy Minister of Economy in the current government and confidant of Minister Robert Hamboek, comes from the wing of the “realists” (Realos) and received 78.15% of the vote, while her 35-year-old co-president Felix Banaszczak, a federal member of parliament from 2021, belongs to the left side and received a percentage of 92.88%.
The previous leadership, Ricardo Lang and Omid Nuripour, resigned after the Greens’ poor election results in the eastern states last September.
In her speech Ms Bratner warned of an imminent challenge to climate protection policy by the Christian Democrats (CDU). “Get the sweaters out of the closet,” he told delegates, heralding climate protests in the winter campaign for the Feb. 23 election and calling for “strong Greens” to push green policy forward. Mr Banasczak for his part highlighted the need for the Greens to respond to people’s fears and become a beacon of hope that things can get better.
Tomorrow the congress is expected to name the Minister of Economy Robert Hambeck and the Minister of Foreign Affairs Analena Burbock as the head of the pre-election campaign, while at the programming congress in January Mr. Hambeck will also receive the anointing of the “chancellor candidate” for the Greens. A 10-point text will also be put to a vote tomorrow, which includes among other things the reintroduction of property tax, the imposition of speed limits on motorways and the abolition of fixed checks at Germany’s land borders.
