Two men were killed and a woman wounded in a series of knife attacks in midtown Manhattan, New York, and authorities have arrested a suspect whose motive remains unclear, the city’s mayor said.
Eric Adams told reporters that one suspect is in custody and police are “not looking for anyone else.”
According to a police officer, Joe Kenny, the suspect is a 51-year-old homeless man known to authorities because he had been arrested eight other times in the past.
“This is another clear example of the failure of justice and the mental health system in New York,” said the Democratic mayor, who is also being prosecuted by federal authorities for corruption. According to Adams, the perpetrator faces serious psychological problems.
The three attacks took place within the space of two and a half hours on 19th, 30th and 42nd streets in Manhattan – the latter is very close to the United Nations headquarters. The first victim, a 36-year-old builder, was stabbed in the abdomen while working at a construction site and doctors were unable to save him. The second attack was on a 68-year-old man who was fishing in the East River at the time. Shortly after, a 36-year-old woman was attacked and seriously injured. A taxi driver passing by saw the assailant and pointed him out to the authorities, according to the New York Times.
Two large knives with traces of blood were found in the suspect’s possession and his clothes were also stained with blood, Kenny explained.
