The US State Department spokesman said Washington would make it clear to Turkey that the same situation cannot continue, using the phrase “business as usual” with Hamas.
The United States warned Turkey on Monday against hosting the leadership of Hamas, saying Washington did not believe the leaders of a terrorist organization should “live comfortably.”
When asked about reports that some Hamas leaders had moved to Turkey from Qatar, US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller did not confirm the reports but said he was unable to dispute them. He said Washington would make it clear to Turkey’s government that the same situation cannot continue, using the phrase “business as usual” with Hamas.
Miller added that some Hamas leaders are facing charges from the US and Washington believes they should be extradited to the United States.
“We do not believe that the leaders of a vicious terrorist organization should live comfortably anywhere, and that certainly includes a major city of one of our key allies and partners,” Miller told reporters.
A Turkish diplomatic source on Monday rejected reports that Hamas had moved its political office to Turkey, adding that members of the Palestinian militant group visited the country only occasionally.
