The president of USA Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron are expected to announce a ceasefire between Lebanon’s Hezbollah and Israel within 36 hours based on existing plans, four senior Lebanese sources said on Monday.

Earlier, the pan-Arab newspaper Asharq al-Awsat reported that Biden and Macron would declare a 60-day truce on Tuesday.

Officials in Washington declined to comment when asked about a possible announcement on Tuesday.

For its part, the French presidency reported that the discussions on the ceasefire in Lebanon have made significant progress.

“We continue to work with (…) our American partners in this direction (…) we hope that all involved will seize this opportunity as soon as possible,” the statement said.

The government of Israel announced that tomorrow, Tuesday, the Security Council will meet to decide on the acceptance of the agreement.

The possible terms of the agreement

According to previous discussions, the agreement may include the following:

1) Cease fire for a period of two months

2) Withdrawal of Israeli forces from the territory they have entered into Lebanon.

3) At the same time, strong forces of the Lebanese army will return to the area, which, together with forces of the UN peacekeeping force, will patrol so that Hezbollah does not recover.

4) An international commission will be established to monitor the implementation of the ceasefire agreement and UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which was passed in 2006 to end a month-long war between Israel and Hezbollah, but was never fully implemented.
