Syrian Kurdish forces launched an offensive against Turkish-backed militants in the north of the country
Syrian Kurdish forces launched an attack on Turkish-backed militants in the north of the country today, killing at least 11 people – including civilians – the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.
The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which controls much of northeastern Syria, launched attacks against Turkish-backed militants in the Ras al-Ain region, the London-based non-governmental organization said but maintains a wide network of sources in Syria.
“A woman, her two children and a man were killed in the shelling of a military facility used by Ankara-backed (rebel) organizations” that are active in (illegal) people-trafficking operations to Turkey, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. According to the same source, “seven fighters of the pro-Turkish forces were killed in a raid by special forces” of the SDF in a nearby village.
On Sunday, at least 15 pro-Turkish Syrian fighters were killed when they invaded SDF-controlled territory, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported.
The US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces have spearheaded the fight against the Islamic State jihadist group, whose last strongholds in Syrian territory fell in 2019. Its main component is the People’s Protection Units (YPG), which Ankara labels the Syrian arm of the outlawed Labor Kurdistan Party (PKK).
Turkish troops and Turkish-backed Syrian rebel groups control parts of northern Syria.
