The presidium of the German Social Democrats unanimously proposed Olaf Scholz as chancellor candidate in the early elections on 2/23 – The chancellor appears determined to win
All 33 members of the presidium of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) voted in favor of the candidacy of the current chancellor, Olaf Scholz. Among them is Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, whose name has been widely discussed in the ruling party recently as a possible alternative to Soltz due to his high popularity. After the bureau meeting, Chancellor Scholz told reporters at the Social Democrats’ headquarters in Berlin: “The vote was unanimous and the message is extremely clear. We want to fight together. Let’s work together to ensure that our country continues to prosper, with a policy that proves we are able to rise to the challenges of the times.”
In a letter to all party members, Olaf Solz appears determined that he is able to lead his party to victory, as in the previous election, in which he managed to defeat German conservative candidate Armin Lasset. Olaf Solz notes in the letter: “Together with you I want to emerge victorious in the next election. And I am sure that if we all fight together, then everything is possible.”
Validation of the nomination at the conference is standard
In his short speech after the presidency gave the go-ahead for his candidacy, Olaf Solz once again referred to the reasons why he launched the early appeal to the polls: “Recently it has become clear that the making of important decisions was increasingly difficult. And that is why I have decided to end the co-government by dismissing Finance Minister Christian Lindner. It was right to ask for a vote of confidence from the parliament in December. It was also right to call an election on 23 February. Now is the time to listen to the citizens, who are called upon to decide which direction Germany will take. I am confident that we have a bright future ahead of us.”
Olaf Solz’s candidacy must now be ratified at the Social Democrats’ congress on January 11. Voting has a purely formal character. The bar for member voting is high, however. In May 2021 the chancellor managed to secure an impressive 96.2% for his candidacy.
