Brazil’s far-right former president Jair Bolsonaro was “actively involved” in a coup plot to prevent Lula’s leftist successor from returning to power after the 2022 election, according to a federal police report released today.

The former head of state (2019-2022) was also “fully aware” of the alleged plot to kill Luis Inacio Lula da Silva, according to the final 884-page police report, which calls for Bolsonaro and 36 others to be charged persons, mostly military personnel.

The report, made public today after it was sent to the country’s top prosecutor by the Supreme Court, lists eight key elements to support the formal charge against Bolsonaro for the alleged coup attempt.

Bolsonaro planned and directly acted in a criminal conspiracy aimed at the coup after his failure to seek re-election in 2022, according to an official police indictment.

Federal police today released the full contents of a formal indictment against the former president, a limited version of which was filed last week, accusing Bolsonaro and dozens of former ministers and senior advisers of plotting a coup to overturn the election result.

The report was delivered to the prosecution and it is now up to the Attorney General of the Republic Paulo Gonet to decide whether to prosecute or not.

“The evidence gathered during the investigations showed beyond doubt that Bolsonaro planned and took part directly and effectively in the actions of a criminal organization aimed at carrying out a coup that did not take place due to circumstances contrary to his will,” it says. the exhibition.

Bolsonaro, 69, who has always proclaimed his innocence, has repeatedly said he is the victim of “political persecution”.

The term ‘coup’ was never part of my vocabulary,” he told a press conference on Monday.

However, the investigators assure that Bolsonaro was “fully aware” and had “actively participated” in the “illegal actions aimed at abolishing the democratic rule of law”.

According to the report, the former head of state was also “fully aware” of the “Green Dagger” operation aimed at killing Lula, Vice President-elect Gerald Alkmin and Supreme Court judge Alexandre de Moraes after the far-right failed to be re-elected.

Last week, a police operation linked to this massive investigation resulted in the arrest of four military officers and one police officer suspected of preparing this triple assassination plot before Lula’s inauguration.
