Romania’s Supreme Court has officially ordered a recount of votes for the first round of the country’s presidential election, following a shock victory for far-right candidate Calin Gheorgescu.

The decision of the Constitutional Court was taken unanimously, confirming the relevant information.

Riding in single digits ahead of Sunday’s vote, the independent far-right politician, 62, scored a victory that raised questions about how such a surprise in the European Union and a NATO member state was possible.

She will face centrist candidate Elena Lasconi in the second round on December 8.

9.46 million people voted in the Romanian elections.

Gheorgescu won many votes from young voters and Romanians living abroad, and his campaign was heavily based on the TikTok platform. On Wednesday, a senior official at Romania’s telecoms regulator called for TikTok to be suspended pending an investigation into its possible role in the election.

TikTok has dismissed such concerns, responding that most candidates campaigned on its platform as well as other social media sites.

In October, the Constitutional Court banned a far-right politician from running in the presidential election, a decision that analysts, civil rights groups and some parties said exceeded constitutional powers.
