It is critical that the ceasefire be observed in order to guarantee the safety of the populations in both Lebanon and Israel.
The European Union’s foreign minister has called on the Israeli army and the Lebanese Shiite movement Hezbollah to abide by a ceasefire agreement that came into effect this week.
“It is now crucial that the ceasefire is observed as agreed to guarantee the safety of the populations in both Lebanon and Israel and to allow the internally displaced on both sides of the border to return to their homes,” stressed Giuseppe Borrell. in a press release published by the European Council yesterday Thursday.
Also, Mr. Borel called for the national sovereignty of both countries to be fully respected and for the cross-border exchanges of fire to stop. He called on all actors in the region and internationally to support the agreement.
The High Representative assured that the EU will continue to support efforts to provide humanitarian aid and advance reconstruction in Lebanon.
The agreement came into effect on Wednesday at 04:00 (Greece time), ending more than a year of heavy firefights between Hezbollah and the Israeli army, a conflict that turned into open war in late September.
However, yesterday Thursday both sides denounced violations of the fragile truce.
