The head of Iranian diplomacy, Abbas Araghchi arrived last Sunday night in Ankara, a few hours after he discussed in Damascus with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad about the attack launched last Wednesday by jihadists and rebel groups allied with them, seizing — among dozens of other communities — the strategically important city of Aleppo, Turkish media reported.

Mr. Aragchi will meet within the day with Turkish counterpart of Hakan Fidan and is expected to be accepted by the president Recep Tayyip Erdogan, officials said.

President Assad yesterday, receiving the foreign minister of the Islamic Republic, emphasized the importance of “supporting allies” in “countering terrorist attacks”, his services announced.

Russia and Iran are key allies of the Assad regime; Turkey supports some rebel organizations.

In recent months, the Turkish president was said to be seeking a rapprochement with his Syrian counterpart.

The Turkish armed forces and rebel organizations supported by them control large areas of northern Syria. Turkey is currently hosting some 3.2 million Syrian refugees, according to UN figures.
