Mohammadi was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023, mainly for her fight against the death penalty and against the compulsory nature of the headscarf
The Iranian Nobel Peace Prize laureate Nargis Mohammadi, who has been imprisoned since November 2021, was released today for medical reasons, her lawyer announced through X.
“According to the medical examiner’s opinion, the prosecutor’s office in Tehran suspended for three weeks the execution of Nargis Mohammadi’s sentence and she was released from prison,” announced her lawyer, Mostafa Nili.
Nargis Mohammadi, 52, has been convicted and imprisoned several times over the past 25 years for campaigning against the compulsory nature of the headscarf for women and against the death penalty.
He has spent much of the last decade in prison.
“The reason for her release is her physical condition after the removal of a tumor and after a bone graft, which were carried out 21 days ago,” Nili underlined.
“The tumor that was removed was benign, but (Mohammadi) needs to be examined every three months,” her lawyer said.
In June, the Iranian Nobel laureate was sentenced to new one-year prison sentence for “propaganda against the state”.
She had refused to attend hearings in her trial after unsuccessfully requesting that the trial be open to the public.
In March, Nargis Mohammadi sent an audio message from her prison in which she denounced a “large-scale war against women” in the Islamic Republic.
In Iran, women have been obliged since the Islamic Revolution of 1979 to respect a strict dress code that obliges them to cover their hair in public.
