The French president Emmanuel Macron will have separate bilateral meetings with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky and the US president-elect Donald Trump before the reopening ceremony of its cathedral Our Lady of Paris on Saturday, the French presidency announced.

This will be Trump’s first visit abroad since winning the Nov. 5 election.

Macron is among the leaders currently in power who met the soon-to-be 47th president during his first term – an asset he will try to build on to assert himself as a key European partner of the US.

Trump’s return to power has raised concerns across Europe about the future of US support for Ukraine in its war against Russia.

The president of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen was scheduled to attend but canceled Friday night.

Earlier in the day, von der Leyen angered France by going to Uruguay to sign a trade deal with the South American bloc Mercosur, which Paris had strongly opposed.
