A British businessman living permanently in Mexico was killed in front of his teenage daughter by gunmen who chased his car near the popular tourist destination Playa del Carmen, according to a source close to the state government in Quintana Roo and Mexican media.
The victim of the attack that was committed the day before yesterday, Saturday, was Chris Clive, 54 years old, according to the source. A resident of Mexico since 2013, the businessman was driving on a highway near Playa del Carmen when executors approached his car and opened fire. His daughter, who was in the car, suffered minor injuries; her life is not in danger.
Two suspects were arrested late Saturday as they are suspected of involvement in the murder, according to the Quintana Ro prosecutor. It was found in their possession and a weapon that could have been used in the murder was confiscated, according to the same source.
The prosecutor’s office and the police did not respond yesterday Sunday when the Reuters news agency asked them for more details about the case and to confirm the identity of the victim. In a statement, the British embassy said: “We support the family of a British man who was killed in Mexico and are in contact with the Mexican police and local authorities.” He did not reveal the details of the victim.
Chris Cleve was active in the real estate sector and had recently received threats from a local gang, according to Mexican media. Dozens of messages from friends and acquaintances, shocked after the news of his murder, have been posted on his Facebook page.
The Mexican government had deployed reinforcements – especially National Guard units – in the state of Quintana Roo late last year amid escalating violence against organized crime gangs. Among other things, two foreign tourists were killed by gunmen on a beach, an incident that had panicked tourists who were vacationing at a hotel.
