At least 110 people were killed over the weekend in the Haitian capital’s Cite Soleil slum when a gang leader targeted people over the age of 60 who he suspected had infected his child with “witchcraft,” the National Network for the Defense of Human Rights said Sunday ( RNDDH).

Monel “Mikano” Felix and the Viv Ansanm gang alliance he is part of are said to be responsible for the carnage, according to the non-governmental organization.

The RNDDH explained that after his child fell ill, Felix sought advice from a voodoo priest, who accused the elderly of causing the illness with black magic, pushing the gang leader to order the massacre.

The non-governmental organization reported at least 60 killings on Friday and another 50 on Saturday with knives and machetes, adding that the victims were all aged 60 and over.

Cite Soleil, a densely populated slum near the port of Port-au-Prince, the Haitian capital, is one of the poorest and most violent areas in all of Haiti.

“Micano”, leader of the Wharf Jeremie gang, has been banned from entering the neighboring Dominican Republic since 2022.
