Thousands of Syrians are returning to their country after the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime.

Turkish TV channel TRT Haber published drone footage showing heavy traffic congestion on the roads leading to Damascus. In fact, many people abandon their cars and continue their journey on foot.

The same picture of queues and waiting as hundreds of Syrian refugees gathered at two border crossings in southern Turkey on Monday, eagerly anticipating their return home.

Many arrived at the Cilvegozu and Oncupinar gates at dawn, dressed in blankets and coats. Some camped nearby, lighting makeshift fires to keep warm.

Syria’s 13-year civil war has caused one of the “world’s largest refugee crises,” according to the United Nations. About 7.2 million Syrians were displaced from their homes inside the country, mostly in rebel-held areas, while more than six million fled and became refugees.

The rebel offensive that finally toppled Bashar al-Assad from power on Sunday has prompted a huge number of refugees to return.
