Many arrived at the Cilvegozu and Oncupinar gates at dawn, dressed in blankets and coats. Some camped nearby, lighting makeshift fires to keep warm.

Syria’s 13-year civil war has caused one of the “world’s largest refugee crises,” according to the United Nations. About 7.2 million Syrians were displaced from their homes inside the country, mostly in rebel-held areas, while more than six million fled and became refugees.
The rebel offensive that finally toppled Bashar al-Assad from power on Sunday has prompted a huge number of refugees to return.
