They also underlined “the importance of maintaining the territorial integrity and national sovereignty of Syria”
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday discussed the situation in Syria after the fall of President Bashar al-Assad and said they were willing to “cooperate with the new leaders” conditionally, the chancellery in Berlin said.
“Both agreed that they are ready to work with the new leaders, on the basis of respect for fundamental rights and the protection of ethnic and religious minorities,” according to a news release from the chancellery.
They also underlined “the importance of maintaining the territorial integrity and national sovereignty of Syria”.
The two leaders also agreed to work together to strengthen the European Union’s commitment to Syria, in particular supporting an “inclusive political process”, in close coordination with its partners in the Middle East, always according to Berlin.
Bashar al-Assad’s regime collapsed on Sunday after a lightning advance by rebels spearheaded by the radical Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the former Syrian arm of al-Qaeda.
Western capitals do not hide their satisfaction with the end of the dictatorship of President Bashar al-Assad, who remained in power for 24 years, but they are worried about the developments in the country and the risk of its collapse in the image of the chaos in Libya after the fall of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.
