Outgoing US Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, 82, fell and was injured on Capitol Hill today, but “is fine,” according to Republican Sen. John Thune, who briefed reporters earlier about the accident.
“He’s fine, he’s in his office,” said Thune, 63, who will succeed McConnell early this year after Republicans have secured control of the body.
McConnell, 82, has said, however, that he intends to see out his term as a senator, despite his failing health. In March 2023, he fell at a campaign rally, breaking a rib and suffering a concussion. In the summer of the same year, he had “frozen” twice in front of journalists, unable to answer the questions they asked him.
Mitch McConnell served as Senate Majority Leader from 2015 to 2021 and has been Minority Leader ever since.
