Turkey will reopen its embassy in Syria within the day, Turkey’s official Anadolu news agency reported Friday, citing Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.

Embassy staff in Damascus “are on their way” and the delegation “will start operating tomorrow,” Mr. Fidan on the NTV television network, the agency noted.

The Turkish embassy was closed in 2012, while a civil war was now raging in Syria.

On Sunday, a rebel alliance spearheaded by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), al-Qaeda’s former Syrian arm, overthrew the authoritarian regime of President Bashar al-Assad, in power for 24 years.

Turkey, which supported rebel groups during the war, is now seen as possibly the most influential foreign actor.

However, analysts point out that despite its influence, Ankara does not have “control” of the new power. A source of the German Agency in Ankara confirmed that the Turkish government has no control over the decisions of the HTS, however he “hopes” that the political transition will be “peaceful”.
