According to the SBU, Russian forces are dropping chemical weapons on Ukrainian soldiers using drones
The head of Russia’s nuclear, biological and chemical defense unit, Lt. Gen. Igor Kirillov, was killed just hours after he was indicted in Ukraine for war crimes.
On Monday the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) accused Kirillov in absentia of using chemical weapons in Ukraine.
The SBU reported that chemical weapons have been used in Ukraine more than 4,800 times since Russia invaded in February 2022.
“The preliminary investigation is ongoing to document other incidents of violations of international humanitarian law,” the SBU reported on Monday.
Ukrainian colonel Artem Vlasiuk said more than 2,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been treated for chemical poisoning during the war and three people have died.
According to the SBU, Russian forces are dropping chemical weapons on Ukrainian soldiers using drones. “Chemical grenades” release poisonous gases that irritate the eyes and respiratory system.
Kirillov promoted the Russian narrative of a “network of bioweapons manufacturing laboratories in Ukraine operating on behalf of and with the support of the US Pentagon”, reports which Washington has categorically denied.
