The defendant “had previously threatened to do something that would attract international attention.”

A German official said police had made contact with the suspect, who is accused of driving into a Christmas market in Magdeburg and killing five people.

THE Christian PegelMecklenburg-West Pomerania’s interior minister, said authorities were seeking relevant information about the suspect, identified in German media as Taleb A.

The 50-year-old, whose surname remains withheld due to German law, lived in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania between 2011 and January 2016.

Mr. Pegel said this was probably part of his training to become a specialist doctor.

Two “controversial” incidents

The official then reported two incidents where the suspect made contact with police.

Suspect ‘referred to Boston Marathon bombing’

Him April 2023Taleb A was charged with “disturbance of public order for threatening to commit criminal acts”.

Mr. Pegel said this probably had “regarding a dispute with the Medical Chamber“, but the suspect had “threaten to do something that would attract international attention” and referred to the Boston Marathon attack.

Three people were killed in the 2013 attack when two improvised bombs were planted at the finish line of the marathon.

The apartment of the “driver of death”

A search warrant was issued for Taleb A’s apartment, but “no evidence was found to indicate preparation for the commission of such a crime, nor was there any evidence of Islamist leanings».

The doctor said he would do something “that people will remember for a long time»

In a separate incident the following year, the suspect contacted a public authority in Stralsund requesting financial support for his living expenses.

Mr. Pegel said:The information we have is that in trying to secure this funding, asking for support for his request, he said he would carry out actions that would attract international attention and that people would remember for a long time».

Discussion followed on the review of radicalisation, which is used when police believe someone may be a potential threat, with the suspect.

He told him then that the authorities would be watching him, Mr. Pegel.
